ABSTRACT

Background: Dietary exposure to mercury in women of childbearing age could result in neurological effects on the fetus. A health risk assessment of total mercury by fishery products intake has not been conducted in this population group in Bogota, Colombia. On the other hand, it has been suggested that selenium content on fishery products may have a protective effect against mercury toxicity. Nevertheless, selenium content on fish species marketed in Bogota has not been determined. Objective: Exposure risk to total mercury and selenium content on fishery products consumed by women of childbearing age from Bogota, Colombia, were assessed. Methods: Total mercury and selenium concentrations for products available at fish stores and supermarkets were determined. The exposure risk to total mercury was estimated considering the intake of these products by women of childbearing age group. Results: Total mercury highest concentrations were 0.8166 mg/kg in mota (Calophysusmacropterus), and 0.6275 mg/kg in catfish (Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum). On the other hand, the highest selenium concentration was 0.6471 mg/kg in nicuro (Pimelodus blochii). Finally, it was established that for women of childbearing age group, health risk of exposure to total mercury due to mota intake exceeded by 8.56-fold the reference dose. Conclusions:Mota intake considerably increases exposure risk to total mercury on women of childbearing age from Bogota, Colombia. The selenium levels established in the fishery products assessed, except for catfish and mota, are theoretically suggestive of a protective effect of selenium against mercury toxicity. Consequently, continuous total mercury concentrations monitoring is required to protect health of women of childbearing age and the general population from Bogota, Colombia

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objectives: To relate dietary intake of iron with iron status in a sample of women of childbearing age from Santiago de Chile. Methods: A Food Frequency Survey was applied to 51 women between 18 - 35 years of age to estimate intake of dietary iron, together with the measurement of biochemical biomarkers to determine iron stores. Using the Mann-Whitney statistical test, significant differences were analyzed between the groups according to nutritional status of iron and its blood parameters. Results: Thirty seven of the participants (72.5%) do not meet the recommended daily iron intake. Two had anemia, 2 had iron deficiency without anemia, and twelve had depleted iron stores. Three women with deficient iron stores had an adequate iron intake, while 71% of women with normal iron stores showed an insufficient iron intake. Conclusions: We observed a low compliance with the daily iron requirements and no better hematological values were associated with higher iron intake, despite a high percentage of women with normal iron stores. To identify the type of iron mainly contributed by the diet and if there are other dietary and non-dietary factors affecting iron stores, further analysis of this population group is required.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the epidemiology of human papillomavirus infection in women of childbearing age in Shaanxi Province. Methods A stratified random sampling method was used to select 16705 patients under childbearing age in Shaanxi from January 2015 to January 2020, and 857 healthy patients who had physical examination during the same period were selected as the control group. The general information of patients was obtained through questionnaire survey, and the risk factors were analyzed by single factor and multivariate logistic analysis. Results The detection rate of human papillomavirus infection in 16705 cases was 2570 (15.38%), of which 1972 cases of high-risk type (11.80%) were higher than 598 cases (3.58%) of low-risk type (χ2: 795.77, P 2: 259.08, P <0.001).The proportions of younger than 30 years old, sexual life ≥3 times/week, no condoms, cervical erosion, and smoking were higher in high-risk human papillomavirus infection group than the control group (P<0.05). After multivariate logistic regression analysis, the results showed that the frequency of sexual life and the greater degree of cervical erosion were independent risk factors for high-risk human papillomavirus infection [OR (95% CI): 3.112 (1.607~7.702), 4.209 (2.338~ 12.526, P<0.05], the use of condoms is a high-risk protective factor for human papillomavirus infection [OR(95%CI): 0.674 (0.578~0.699, P<0.05]) Conclusion The frequency of sexual life and the degree of cervical erosion are high in women of childbearing age in Shaanxi. The use of condoms can effectively prevent human papillomavirus infection. Reasonably formulating effective intervention measures and vigorously publicizing the knowledge of human papillomavirus prevention and treatment is the key to reducing human papillomavirus infection in women of childbearing age in Shaanxi.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background The recognition of the causal association between Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy and congenital abnormalities including microcephaly underlines the importance of preventing this disease in pregnant women (PW) and women of childbearing age (WCA). Although Brazil and other Latin American countries reported a significant reduction in the number of ZIKV infections in recent years, epidemic waves can recur in settings with previous outbreaks as conditions for transmission remain optimal and susceptible populations are continuously replenished. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 64 PW and 260 non-pregnant WCA attending routine medical appointments in two primary care units in São Paulo, Brazil, and assessed knowledge and attitudes about ZIKV infection and prevention. Results: Most women reported knowing that ZIKV is transmitted through the bite of Aedes mosquitos, and most knew that acute symptoms are similar to those seen in Dengue infection. Furthermore, most participants correctly described that ZIKV infection during pregnancy may cause detrimental outcomes for the newborn. However, most ignored that ZIKV infection can be asymptomatic, and only 15% knew about the risk of ZIKV sexual transmission. We found no statistically significant differences between PW and WCA regarding knowledge about ZIKV sexual transmission. Knowledge about ZIKV sexual transmission was significantly associated with education; among participants with ≤12 schooling years, only 9.0% (95%CI 3.4-18.5%) correctly answered that ZIKV can be sexually transmitted, compared to 12.9% (95%CI 8.2-18.8%) among participants with 12-14 schooling years, and to 24.4% (95%CI 15.9-34.9%) of participants with ≥15 schooling years (p = 0.015). Education remained independently associated with knowledge about sexual transmission of ZIKV in a multivariate logistic regression model adjusted for age, race and pregnancy status (p = 0.022). Conclusion: Our findings underscore the urgent need of educational and family planning programs that may help prevent detrimental outcomes of ZIKV infection in an endemic area of Brazil.

ABSTRACT

@#This study aims to provide detailed information on the role of the following social determinants (i.e. education, occupation, place of residence, marital and economic status) in the acquisition of HIV knowledge among women of childbearing age (15-49 years old). The study uses secondary data from the 2012 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). The IDHS used a quantitative analytical approach with a cross-sectional study design and multi-stage stratified sampling. The sample included 1,335 women aged 15 to 49 years old living in South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Descriptive analysis, ANOVA, and t-test and multiple logistic regressions were performed in this study. The results show one out of two women have little HIV knowledge. The more highly educated women were positively associated with a greater degree of knowledge related to comprehensive knowledge related to HIV (AOR: 3.7, 2.2-6.2, p.<0.05), HIV prevention (AOR:16.6, 1.8-153.9, p <0.05), transmission from mother to child (AOR:11.1, 3.3-36.9, p <0.05), HIV misconceptions (AOR:5.1, 1.1-23.1, p <0.05) and HIV services (AOR:5.7, 2.8-11.4, p < 0.05). In addition, the women lived in urban areas had more knowledge related to HIV prevention and transmission (AOR: 3.36, 1.8-6.2, p <0.05), and knowledge about mother-to-child of HIV transmission (AOR: 3.2, 1.8-5.5, p <0.05) compared to those who lived in rural areas. To conclude, education level was found to be the dominant factor associated with knowledge of HIV across all categories of knowledge after controlling by other determinants, age, marital status, working status and residence. HIV awareness and comprehensive HIV information among women who are considered to be in a low-risk group for HIV infection should be integrated with formal education as well as in maternal health services, particularly in rural areas.

ABSTRACT

Objective @#To learn the incidence trend of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) among women of childbearing age in Hangzhou from 2009 to 2018, providing evidence for GDM prevention and control.@*Methods@#The information of GDM cases aged 15 to 49 years in Hangzhou from 2009 to 2018 was extracted from Zhejiang non-communicable diseases surveillance system. The crude and age-standardized (by national standard population in 2000) incidence rate of GDM were calculated, the annual change percentage (APC) and the average APC (AAPC) of GDM incidence rate were calculated to understand the trend of incidence in different age groups and areas. @*Results@#A total of 45 519 cases of GDM were reported in Hangzhou from 2009 to 2018. The crude and age-standardized incidence rates were 248.04/100 000 and 158.52/100 000, respectively, both showed upward trends with 59.7% and 56.4% in AAPC (both P<0.05). The APCs of crude and age-standardized incidence rates of GDM were 139.76% and 134.60% from 2009 to 2012, 30.35% and 27.65% from 2012 to 2018, which all had increasing trends (all P<0.05). There were upward trends in GDM incidence in each age groups of 15-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39 and 40-49 years old (all P<0.05). The AAPC of GDM incidence in 40-49 year-old women was 65.3% and ranked the first among all the age groups. The age-standardized incidence rate of GDM increased more in rural areas (AAPC=66.0%) than in urban areas (AAPC=53.4%). @*Conclusion@# A rising trend in GDM incidence among women aged 15-49 years in Hangzhou has been found in recent ten years, especially in women aged 40-49 years and lived in rural areas.

ABSTRACT

Bisphosphonates ( BPs) are bone resorption inhibitors, which are increasingly used in the treatment of bone metabolic diseases in women of childbearing age. It is unclear whether the use of BPs in women of childbearing age will affect the health of their offspring. This article retrieved 66 reports in the past 40 years by searching on the databases of Pubmed, Embase, Ovid, Medline and so on. A number of reports found that BPs may be responsible for shortening gestational age, increasing spontaneous abortion, and decreasing neonatal birth weight. Three women's offsprings were found to have abnormal blood calcium after birth. Cases of skeletal malformations include two bilateral talipes equinus, one Apert's syndrome and one rickets. However, there have been many reports of no reproductive abnormalities or abnormal blood calcium level. Occasionally, children breast-fed by women who had received BPs have had a transient hypocalcemia. There is currently insufficient evidence to confirm that BPs can cause significant reproductive malformations during pregnancy or pre-pregnancy. However, due to the long-term presence of BPs in the bones, women of childbearing age who have a need for pregnancy should choose to use these drugs with caution.

ABSTRACT

The mother-to-child transmission(MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the dominant cause of chronic HBV infection. In order to achieve the goal of "zero" MTCT before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after pregnancy; standardized management for hepatitis HBV infection in women of childbearing age should be regulated. The content of this consensus includes: screening and treatment of HBV in pregnant women and women of childbearing age, treatment of hepatitis B during pregnancy, preventive measures and evaluation of combined immunization of hepatitis B immunoglobulin and hepatitis B vaccine in newborns, anti-viral therapy for all pregnant women with a high HBV DNA level and post-partum period related management. In addition, 16 recommendations were formed for clinicians to standardize the clinical management of HBV infection in women of child-bearing age.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the feasibility and safety of measles vaccination in women of childbearing age and to understand the influence of measles vaccination on the fetal transmission measles antibody level of the infants. Methods From January 1,2012 to December 31,2012,600 women of childbearing age were included in this study. The measles IgG antibody was detected, then all participants were randomized according to the IgG level. The measles IgG antibody of participants in non-vaccinated group was detected predelivery in hospital by enzyme linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA).That of participants in vaccinated group was detected 3 months after vaccination with measles mumps rubella combined vaccine and predelivery by ELISA.And measles nuclear protein fragment gene (measles virus nucleoprotein,MVN) in the blood was detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT PCR).A total of 368 participants gave birth within 2 years after vaccination, and 357 infants 8 months after birth were healthy. In non-vaccinated group,8 infants were diagnosed with measles within 8 months after birth.Finally,349 8-month infants were enrolled in the study, including 52 whose mothers in high antibody without vaccination group,65 whose mothers in high antibody with vaccination group,110 whose mothers in low antibody without vaccination group and 122 whose mothers in low antibody with vaccination group. The measles IgG antibody levels in the blood of all the 8-month infants were detected.Data were analyzed using t test,one-way ANOVA (Newman-Keuls was used for comparison between groups) and Pearson analysis. Results The measles IgG antibody level of expectant women in high antibody without vaccination group was significantly lower compared to that in high antibody with vaccination group ([268.5±74.9] IU/mL vs [578.3t208.1] IU/mL,Q=15.57,P<0.01).That in low antibody without vaccination group was also significantly lower than low antibody with vaccination group ([169.4+42.3] IU/mL vs [584.7+195.8] IU/mL,Q=29.54,P<0.01).The results of MVN RT-PCR after 3 months of vaccination showed no positive bands in all blood samples. Two of the expectant women in high antibody without vaccination group and one in low antibody without vaccination group were positive for MVN bands.Among 8-month infants, the levels of antibody in high antibody without vaccination group and high antibody with vaccination group were (106.3 ± 36.8) IU/mL and (291.8±86.5) IU/mL,respectively,which was statistically different (t=23.33,P<0.01).Those in low antibody without vaccination group and low antibody with vaccination group were (87.1 ± 26.4) IU/mL and (274.0±72.5) IU/mL,respectively,which was statistically different (t =33.27,P<0.01).The measles antibody level of expectant women was positively correlated with their 8-month infants (r=0.652,P<0.01).All 8 infants who were diagnosed with measles were delivered by women without vaccination, and the measles infection rate of infants was significantly different between women with and without vaccination (P=0.002).Condusion It is feasible for women of childbearing age to receive measles vaccination, which can increase the measles IgG antibody level of both expectant women and their infants.

ABSTRACT

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are among the five most frequent reasons forconsultation in adults. In Paraguay there is a limited knowledge about STIs frequencyespecially in non pregnant women of childbearing age. Therefore, this pilot descriptivecross-sectional study analyzed the frequency of syphilis, HIV infection and associatedrisk factors in 100 women of childbearing age (18-48 years) non pregnant who went tothe Regional Hospital of Villa Hayes. Syphilis screening was performed using the immu nochromatography method and confirmation by the Test Fluorescent Treponemal AntibodyAbsorption. HIV infection was detected by the immunochromatographic methodand the test for enzyme-linked immunosorbent. An acceptable knowledge about preventionand transmission of these STIs were considered if 60% of the questions wereanswered correctly. A high frequency of syphilis, about 13% (CI95%7.1-21.2%) and anassociation between low educational level and the presence of syphilis (p = 0.002) wasobserved. No positive result for HIV was found. 11% of women presented an unacceptablelevel of knowledge, however a high frequency of women (58%) who did not usecondoms was evident, indicating lack of good practices. It is necessary to strengthencontrol measures and management of STIs existing in this region especially in nonpregnantwomen of childbearing age.
